The National Trust

The National Trusts are active in every state and territory, managing more than 300 heritage places. For membership, donations, volunteering, properties and events, the National Trust website is the place to start.

Acknowledgement of Country

The National Trusts acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the lands, waters and pathways described on this site, and pay respect to Elders past and present. Stories connected to Country will be told only with, and as guided by, their custodians.

Project news

Where the register stands.

Current

Foundation and pilot

Governance and the curatorial committee are being established, with three pilot trails to launch across three states, carried by the existing National Trust web estate and South Australia’s heritage app.

Current

The founding campaign opens

The campaign seeks $900,000 over four years to develop, build and staff the register through establishment to self sufficiency, with an anchor commitment sought before matched public giving begins.

Next

National launch

A national launch will symbolically connect the five candidate trails, bringing together representatives from each state, First Nations custodians, volunteers, historians, regional tourism bodies and founding donors.

Years two and three

National rollout

The register opens at national scale with some 35 further trails, the full trail builder for every state Trust, member contributions under moderation, additional languages, and publication to Strava, Ride with GPS and Garmin communities.

Some infrastructure is poured in concrete. This is laid in story.

The National Heritage Trails register will outlast every one of us who builds it. It asks for a founding generation. A government willing to recognise it, benefactors willing to seed it, and the National Trust movement, which has kept faith with Australia’s heritage for eighty years, to carry it.
