Places along the way

Waterfall to waterfall along the escarpment.

A Songline walked by generations of Jawoyn people, tracing the western edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment through Nitmiluk National Park. Each day of the walk ends at water, cascades, plunge pools and forest creeks below sandstone cliffs. Audio storytelling meets you at every place, and QR coded signage connects the physical trail to the living register.

1

Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge

Jawoyn country · The start

The journey begins where the Katherine River carves through a chain of sandstone gorges. From the gorge the trail crosses the river and climbs onto the escarpment, following a route Jawoyn families have walked between water, shelter and story for generations.

Biddlecombe Cascades and Crystal Falls

The escarpment camps

The first camps sit beside waterfalls that spill off the edge of the escarpment into forest creeks, thunderous in the early dry season and settling to clear pools as the months pass, with paperbark and pandanus lining every crossing.

17 Mile Falls and the Amphitheatre

Rock art country

Near the midpoint of the walk a sheltered amphitheatre of stone holds galleries of Jawoyn rock art, and 17 Mile Falls drops from the cliff line into a deep pool below. This is the heart of the trail’s story, where the country itself keeps the record.

History and First Nations stories

A Songline with a name, carried by its custodians.

The trail follows a Songline of the Jawoyn people along the western edge of the Arnhem Land escarpment, a route of water, shelter and story walked for generations between Nitmiluk and Leliyn. It bears the name of Peter Jatbula, a Jawoyn elder who walked this country with his family and was instrumental in the land claim that returned Nitmiluk to its people, who now care for the park jointly with the Northern Territory.

National registration carries the trail’s story, told by the Jawoyn, to every Australian, alongside the galleries, gorges and falls that hold it.

Stories connected to Country are told only with, and as guided by, their custodians, under the First Nations custodianship protocols at the centre of the register’s governance.
