History and First Nations stories
A city read from its shoreline.
The harbour was home to the Gadigal, Cammeraygal and other Eora peoples long before the first fleet, and their middens, engravings and fishing places survive along the walk. Over the foreshore came the colony, the lighthouses and forts that guarded it, the ferries that stitched it together, and the quarantine station where generations of migrants first set foot in Australia.
National registration joins those layers into one story, walked in order, from the ocean cliffs to the quarantine ground.
Stories connected to Country are told only with, and as guided by, their custodians, under the First Nations custodianship protocols at the centre of the register’s governance.
